Ryder Cup Qualification: How is Team USA and Team Europe Selected?

The 43rd Ryder Cup is just around a month away. Team USA will compete against Team Europe at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin from, September 24 to 26. However, the Ryder Cup was initially scheduled for 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Top golfers from USA and Europe will lock horns against each other for three days. Furthermore, both teams have a captain who takes the all-important decisions. This year, Steve Stricker is the Team U.S. captain, while Padraig Harrington is the skipper of Team Europe. Furthermore, there are a total of 12 players who take part in the Ryder Cup for Team USA and the same number of players for Team Europe. But what exactly is the selection process for this prestigious event? Let us find out.

The selection for the Team USA is straightforward. All points earned by the U.S. players will be considered since the qualifications began in 2019 until the second FedEx Cup Play-Off event (BMW Championship) on August 29, 2021. And the top six players from this point’s table will earn a spot in the United States team. However, the remaining six players’ selection is where the captain’s role becomes crucial.

Captain Steve Stricker will choose the remaining six players, who he thinks are in form and deserve a place in the team. He will select these six players following the final FedEx Cup Play-Off (Tour Championship). However, as of now, apart from Collin Morikawa, no other player has secured a spot on the Ryder Cup team. So, here is the list of 10 players, out of which only the top six will secure direct qualification.

  1. Collin Morikawa (Q)
  2. Dustin Johnson
  3. Bryson DeChambeau
  4. Brooks Koepka
  5. Justin Thomas
  6. Xander Schauffele
  7. Jordan Spieth
  8. Harris English
  9. Patrick Reed
  10. Daniel Berger

Meanwhile, the European team qualification is almost similar to that of the Team USA. as the qualification deadlines, and the process remains the same. However, the difference is that the European team will comprise the first four players from the European Points List, followed by the leading five players from the World Points List. So, this means nine players will automatically qualify, while the skipper Padraig Harrington will complete the team with three captain’s picks.

  1. Jon Rahm
  2. Tommy Fleetwood
  3. Tyrell Hatton
  4. Rory McIlroy
  5. Victor Hovland
  6. Paul Casey
  7. Matt Fitzpatrick
  8. Lee Westwood
  9. Shane Lowry
  10. Victor Perez
