The 2020 NFL season ended on a disappointing note for Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. The Pete Carroll-coached franchise won the NFC West crown with a 12-4 record. Quarterback Russell Wilson, WR DK Metcalf and safety Jamal Adams, earned major plaudits for their displays during the season.
However, the Seahawks suffered an upset in the Wild Card Playoffs as they lost to divisional rivals, Los Angeles Rams. Coach Carroll’s boys were knocked out by a 20-30 loss. This was the first home playoff loss in the Wilson/Carroll era and their first home playoff loss since 2004. As fate would have it, that loss was also at the hands of the Rams.
There were rumours floating around in the offseason that the NFC West champions were ready to trade Russell Wilson. But the veteran shot–caller decided to stay put and lead his franchise in 2021.
However, Wilson might have to make a few more sacrifices if he wants to reach another Super Bowl finale.

Highly-rated safety Jamal Adams joined the Seattle Seahawks from the New York Jets in a blockbuster trade deal. He had a strong debut season in Washington state last season. Adams concluded the regular season campaign setting the NFL record for sacks by a safety while playing only 12 games.
But with his contract set to run out in 2021, the Seahawks were keen to tie him down to a lengthy extension. Seahawks GM John Schneider and representatives for Jamal Adams were close to an agreement that would make Adams the highest-paid safety in the NFL. But those discussions came to a standstill due to issues regarding contract structure and guaranteed money.
But a recent report from The Seattle Times, claims that star man Russell Wilson is offering to help out in these negotiations. The report adds that Wilson, on multiple occasions, has offered to restructure his deal in order to accommodate Jamal’s demands of a larger guaranteed amount.
If the Seahawks do this, it would turn $17.9 million of Russell’s $19 million salary for this season into a bonus. It would further allow the Seahawks to spread out the cap hit of the salary over the life of the contract.
It would save approximately $11.8 million in cap space in 2021 (Wilson’s cap hit to just $20 million for 2021). But that would increase his 2022 and 2023 cap hits by $5.9 million each year. So GM Schneider and coach Carroll might have an important decision to make in the coming weeks – bet on the present or gamble away the future.
