NASCAR ‘Offers’ Lionel Messi a Race Seat After his FC Barcelona Departure

On Thursday, there were quite a few bombshells in the sporting world as a whole. First and foremost, MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi announced his retirement. A few hours after that, news broke that Argentina footballing superstar, Lionel Messi, will no longer continue his career with FC Barcelona.

This came as a shock to many, as he has spent his entire club career in Barcelona. Of course, since this is the internet, it wasn’t long before the jokes and memes came flooding in. Some sporting teams jokingly announced that they signed him or offered to sign him. Among them was NASCAR, who heard through the grapevine that he ‘needed a new day job’.

What next for Lionel Messi?

On a more serious note, the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner’s farewell speech was quite emotional. Now, he will be on the hunt for another club to acquire his services. Already, several names have been thrown into the hat, including Premier League giants, Manchester City. However, the favorite to sign Messi is Ligue 1 titans, Paris Saint-Germain.

Coming back to NASCAR, the sport is in the middle of its 2021 season, though the regular season is wrapping up. As of now, the battle is between Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson, with four races remaining. Once the regular season ends, then the real battle can begin, namely, the playoffs, to crown the overall champion of the Cup Series.

So far, just three slots are remaining with four races to go. However, it is interesting to note that Denny Hamlin has yet to win a NASCAR Cup Series race in 2021. He managed to get by with an incredibly consistent run of Top 5 finishes in eight of the first 9 races. Beyond that, he stormed to seven more Top 10 finishes, which has somehow managed to keep him in the regular season championship lead.
