How a Car Salesman Served as Lexi Thompson’s Guiding Light at the AIG Women’s Open

Lexi Thompson made it to the AIG Women’s Open with a local caddie this season, a slightly unexpected move following the Olympics. She has parted ways with her previous caddie Jack Fulghum, who was also unwell during the Olympics and ended up pulling out of the round. This was to be her Carnoustie debut, and a local caddie would only help her with invaluable experience.

In Carnoustie, Thompson was with Paul Drummond – who runs his family business PD Cars. He caddied a little on the side at the venue and was open to doing so at the AIG Women’s Open. However, as per reports, he did not expect to caddie someone like Lexi Thompson. The 26-year-old American is a renowned golfer and is one of the youngest major winners.

How did a local Caddie help Lexi Thompson at the AIG Women’s Open?

While there is a slight language barrier, Thompson revealed that Drummond spoke slowly with her, helping through rounds. The 31-year-old massively guided Thompson around the course, who was making a very important debut at the venue.

Thompson added that it had been great and that Drummond does indeed know the golf course “like the back of his hand”. Her shots were made after his advice, as he knew the course, and could tell how it would bounce on the green, and how it would roll-up. “I’m fully trusting him on his numbers and whether to hit it left or right of the pin, and he’s been spot on.”

The 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship winner explained that she did have a good time with Paul on the bag, who had a lot of local knowledge. Drummond wore a cap and bip which had Thompson’s name on it and started working with her via a Carnoustie caddie master.

“I’ve had plenty of work here, but never anyone as high profile as Lexi Thompson,” he said. “I would say she’s pretty good fun”. Drummond believes he helped her out on the greens, and admitted to knowing the greens out there because he has played here a lot.

“It’s about passing on that knowledge”.

The 26-year-old also feels like she has achieved a lot, and is not here to prove anything to anyone. “Golf is such a crazy up-and-down game. You just have to take the downs and go with a positive attitude going into the next one”.

She recently took to congratulate her brother Curtis on Twitter, who finally received his PGA Tour card.
