“Get Rid of It” – Joey Logano and Other Drivers Not Happy with Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course Kerbs

At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, the track’s kerbs were the biggest point of contention. Many drivers complained about them and they even instigated a few pile-ups. With six laps to go, some of the drivers raced over the kerbs and dislodged one, triggering a multi-car crash. Team Penske driver Joey Logano was one of the many drivers who was quite vocal in his criticisms.

He said, “If you ask my opinion, just take it out. Just get rid of it in general. Turns 5 and 6 don’t need to be there and here’s why. You can’t go too wide on that section anyway, or not really effectively. If you go too wide, the third placed guys will blow your doors off through Turn 7 because you have no momentum. You’ve got to go single-file through there with any speed.”

According to the 2014 Cup Series champion, Turn 7 is a “crazy braking zone,” just like Turn 1. In all honesty, the first turn is usually a scene of chaos, with all the drivers trying to funnel through. Joey Logano believes that the kerbs do not help contribute to the racing and even lead to damage.

What else did Joey Logano say?

The Penske driver insisted that the kerbs make no difference in the speed and do nothing to slow the cars. He cited the example of the IndyCar drivers, who drive fairly quickly at that sequence. The incident caught out several cars, which also included Logano plowing head-first into the tire barrier.

Other victims included William Byron, Kyle Busch, Daniel Suarez, Martin Truex Jr, and many more. Some ended up worse off than others, while the rest were able to limp back to the pitlane.

Admittedly, the signs were all there when the same kerbs launched a few cars airborne. The authorities tried to remedy the situation when they removed the Turn 6 kerb. However, it exposed another kerb, which caused another incident on the re-start.
