Aston Villa announced the shock signing of Danny Ings from Southampton earlier today in what was one of the most unexpected moments in the entire transfer window. The Saints hitman is already a Villa player and will be dawning a new jersey for the English Premier League 2021/22 season.
Although the fee was undisclosed by Aston Villa, Sky Sports believed it to be around £25M with other sources ranging it around £30M. With one year left on his contract at Southampton, this truly is a bargain signing for Villa, a club that has been making interesting signings all summer.
The biggest question around this move is- How did it go under the radar? News of Danny Ings’ transfer had not hit any major agency, and Fabrizio Romano, who is normally on top of transfers, filled to notice any talk of this.
The reason no one saw this huge transfer coming was due to the huge smokescreen that has gathered over the last few days. Earlier this week, Harry Kane skipped two Tottenham Hotspur training sessions ahead of a heavily rumoured move to Manchester City. However, the highest Premier League goalscorer was forced to follow his contractual obligations.
Jack Grealish was the biggest smokescreen for this transfer
After that particular controversial set of events, Manchester City stepped up its game to sign Villa’s homegrown star Jack Grealish, who has been pivotal to his club’s rise in recent years. With Aston Villa almost ready to give its winger up to City, it has already begun its process of replacing him.
With less than 10 days to go for the season to begin, Manchester City worked quickly which is why fans were caught off guard by Grealish’s imminent move to the Manchester Blues. In all these proceedings, no one really saw the strings moving under the table. While all expected the club to announce Jack Grealish’s departure, in came Danny Ings.
Despite his upsetting injury, Danny Ings managed to score 12 goals in his 29 appearances last season. His time out of the game along with that of Southampton’s centre back Jannik Vestergaard’s saw a dramatic decline in performance for the team.
Ings can combine well with Watkins, who scored 14 goals in 37 appearances last season. Emiliano Buendia is expected to take Grealish’s role as the playmaker in what will be a revised formation for Villa. Two strikers upfront with the potential to assist each other could see some tremendous firepower against defences.
