VIDEO: Jose Mourinho Goes Ecstatic After Portugal’s Medal Victory at Tokyo Olympics 2020

Judoka Jorge Fonseca won Portugal’s first medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020 earlier today. Fonseca, who competed in the men’s sub-100kg category, defeated Canadian Shady El Nahas in the first of two bronze medal matches.

The 28-year-old’s victory drew raucous cheers from his fellow countrymen, one of whom was Jose Mourinho. While he watched Fonseca’s victory on television, he shared his reaction to his victory on Instagram.

The 58-year-old will continue his managerial career with Italian football club AS Roma this season. After Tottenham Hotspur sacked him midway last season, he embarks by managing the ninth club of his prolonged career.

Millions in the football world regard Mourinho as one of the greatest football managers of all time. And while a few weeks remain for his season to start, he took the time to watch Fonseca’s match at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics with his staff.

With Fonseca and El Nahas closely matched, neither could score a point in the first three minutes. However, the 28-year-old made his move with 26 left on the clock, pinning his opponent down to score a Waza-Ari. While this proved enough to seal Fonseca’s victory, it sent Mourinho and his staff into a state of euphoria.

The former Chelsea manager took to Instagram to share his reactions with his followers.

Mourinho and his new club look to prepare for an arduous season in the Italian Serie A. Their season will begin on August 22 against ACF Fiorentina.

World No. 2 Fonseca caps off incredible comeback story in Tokyo

A year before the 2016 Rio Olympics, doctors detected a malignant tumor in Fonseca’s left leg. However, he made an excellent recovery to make it in time to Rio. Although he lost in the second round there, he didn’t let that stop him from getting better and better.

He won the 2019 and 2021 editions of the Judo World Championships heading into Tokyo. While he won his Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches, he lost to World No. 6 Guham Cho in the semifinal.

Although he won bronze, Fonseca admitted he already looks forward to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He said“I worked towards gold and got bronze. It didn’t go as well as I wanted but now I’m working on winning the gold in Paris [in the 2024 Olympics].”

Should Fonseca keep this current run of form for the next three years, he could be a favorite in Paris.
