US Women’s Football Team Destroys New Zealand at Tokyo Olympics 2020 in Dominant Fashion

Team USWNT earned their first win of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 as they thrashed New Zealand 6-1 in the second match of their group campaign. The team bounced back after suffering a 3-0 loss in their last game against Sweden in what was their first defeat in 45 games. Rose Lavelle, Lindsay Horan, Christen Press, Alex Morgan were on the scoresheet.

There were two own goals from New Zealand as well which made their defeat even sour. To add salt to the wound, the team has now hit rock bottom in their group. The United States is currently second in the group. They are tied with Australia on points but a superior goal difference means the team is ahead on standings. Group leaders, Sweden managed to secure a win over the Aussies earlier today.

USWNT is back on track yet again after a disappointing blow in their first outing. One might expect this exceptional performance to further boost their confidence ahead of a crucial showdown against Australia next.

The teams clashed in the Saitama Stadium. Not long after the start of the game, Lavelle registered the first US goal of the tournament. Lindsey Hora came up with one of her signature headers to double the lead for the Aussies. Horan became the seventh USWNT player to score on her 100th cap for the country.

Star forward, Christen Press registered her first of the tournament on the 80th minute. She also came up with an assist on the 88th minute to set up Alex Morgan to score yet another goal at the big stages. Overall, it was a dominant and impressive display from the team.

Can USWNT advance to the knockout stages of the tournament?

Team USA will take on Australia in the last match of their group. Both teams are tied on points and a win will secure automatic progress to the next round for either team. But, a draw will be good enough for the USA as well.

And given the fact that all the US players looked in their familiar form today, it will be hard for any team to better them if they can manage to keep up the same level of performance.

Can the USWNT keep the momentum going at the Tokyo Olympics 2020? Let us know.
