Tokyo Olympics 2020: Day Six Medal Tally Update- China and Japan Lead

Day six of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 saw a tough match to top the medal tally between Japan, China, and USA. The qualification matches have been going on for most sports, while eight sports saw victory ceremonies today.

Artistic gymnastics, canoe slalom, fencing, judo, rowing, shooting, swimming, and table tennis saw podium finishes. Over 59 countries have won medals at the mega-quadrennial games.

Notably, San Marino became the smallest country, to ever win a medal at Olympics, after clinching bronze in shooting.

China back on the top of the medal tally

After losing its first spot to Japan and the USA after day one, China made a comeback on the first position. With 31 medals; 15 gold, 7 silver, and 9 bronze the nation is leading.

China continued its record domination in table tennis clinching the gold and silver medal in the women’s singles event. Whereas they also pipped the USA to win the gold medal in swimming.

Japan continued its domination in Judo

While China might have taken the host nation’s top position, they are not very behind. Japan clean swept the Judo events, yet again winning the gold medals in men’s and women’s events. While they also bagged a gold medal in the men’s gymnastics event.

The biggest upset for the team was Kei Nishikori, the Rio Olympics medalist, losing to world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic. While they also couldn’t clinch the gold medal in table tennis, settling for bronze.

Even after favorite Simone Biles withdrawing from the gymnastics event, team USA had a stellar run and won the gold in the women’s event. Adding to the tally, Caeleb Dressel had a golden win in the swimming men’s event.

ROC (Russia) and Australia maintained their places in the fourth and fifth position. Here is the list of medal winners on day six of the mega event.
