Tennis fans have witnessed quite unique pairs in the mixed doubles category at the Wimbledon Championships 2021. However, there is a couple who is not playing in the same category but is playing exceptionally well in the singles category. The pair is that of World No.9 Matteo Berrettini and his girlfriend Alja Tomljanovic.
In a recent interview, Matteo Berrettini and Alja Tomljanovic explained the reasons for not playing in the mixed doubles category of the Wimbledon Championships 2021. Alja mentioned that the rain spoiled their chances of playing in the mixed doubles category at the Grand Slam.
“Well, because we have been planning to play for the longest time and we always find the reason why not. But this time, the rain screwed us up because we have to play back-to-back. For me, it’s not a big problem even though I have to play women’s doubles and then for him, I mean he is playing best of five,” said Tomljanovic in the interview.
The Croatian player also stated that perhaps for her it is a little bit easy to play in the mixed doubles category. However, her boyfriend will find surely it more difficult as he has to play the best of five matches at Grand Slams.

Matteo Berrettini reveals that the couple was so close to playing in the mixed doubles at the Wimbledon Championships 2021
Interestingly, Berrettini highlighted that he and Tomljanovic were so close to signing for the mixed doubles category at Wimbledon 2021. However, that thing just couldn’t take place.
“But we were really close. I think we never being close to sign. You actually wrote the email and then you saved it,” said Berrettini while talking to his girlfriend.
As of now, both Matteo Berrettini and Alja Tomljanovic are in the pre-quarters of the Wimbledon Championships 2021. They’ll play against Ilya Ivashka and Emma Raducanu respectively tomorrow. Will the fans ever see the pair playing mixed doubles at a major?
