For the past week or so, the 2021 Summer Olympic Games have been ongoing. Of course, since this is the biggest event in the entire sporting calendar, it would be foolish to air other major events against it. As a rest, NASCAR and many other sports have elected to take a hiatus or a summer break.
This will undoubtedly be a godsend for many of the NASCAR drivers who will want to unwind. Already, the season has been hectic, and the competition has been fierce. So, every driver will love a chance to recharge their mental batteries.
Among the drivers, Kevin Harvick is glad to get away from his own race car. He is using his time to keep an eye on his young son’s career behind the wheel.
“I’d rather have a summer break and not have all the breaks at the beginning of the year,” Harvick said. “I’d take it off the front end because everybody’s fresh and energized.
“I think having this two-week break really allows these guys in the shop and on the road to be able to actually have two, for-sure weeks off that they can plan around. That’s something very important to the families of those individuals.”
Why is this so important for NASCAR drivers?
Harvick even suggested that the factories can shut down fully, like how Formula One does. In other words, it would be helpful if it was mandatory for nobody to be in the buildings for the first week. Even the likes of Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr were glad to have the break.
“Having an off-week is good,” Busch said. “I think it’s about time for us, a good summer break anyways to be able to go out and do things in the summertime that typically you’d always have to wait for the wintertime.
“I can’t tell you how many winter vacations I’ve been on and places that I’ve gone in December, January versus actually being able to go somewhere far away in July.”
This break comes four races before the final charge for the Playoffs with four races to go. This is important because the Playoffs commence a grueling stretch of 14 consecutive weekends of racing.
