Eddie Hearn: Dimitry Bivol “Frontrunner” for Canelo Alvarez Next

2021 has already seen some big fights like Alvarez-Saunders play out. With Anthony Joshua facing Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury facing Deontay Wilder, this year still has a lot more to offer to the boxing community. However, fans might not get to see Canelo Alvarez unify the super-middleweight division for quite some time.

Over this week, negotiations for a mega unification super middleweight matchup between IBF titleholder Caleb Plant and pound-for-pound champ Canelo Alvarez fell through.

Canelo Alvarez‘s promoter Eddie Hearn has already charted out his next steps. Hearn recently shared that WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol could be next in line for the three-division unified champion.

He added Bivol is being considered for the September slot, which was originally booked for Caleb Plant. However, there is still a silver lining for reigniting negotiations with Caleb Plant’s team for the unification clash for a later date in 2021.

Canelo Alvarez – Dmitry Bivol is in the works

It seems Alvarez could move back up to light-heavyweight to face Russian WBA titleholder Dmitry Bivol. Dmitry Bivol’s promoter, Andrey Ryabinskiy, confirmed that Canelo Alvarez’s team has reached out to the Russian corner with an offer for September 18.

Bivol’s promoter acknowledged that they have received an official offer to them. However, neither teams have reached a final agreement yet.

The fight has been mentioned to us, but we have not finalized any type of agreement. We would be interested in the fight within adequate timelines, it’s a great test for Dmitry, said Andrey Ryabinsky in an interview with Sky Sports.

Dmitry Bivol is coming off a unanimous decision win over Craig Richards in London, UK. He has held the WBA light-heavyweight belt since 2017. The Russian champion has had six fights in the same division since then.

Bivol applies good movement and word-class footwork. Overall, he has shown smart striking in his professional fights, and by no means, would it be an easy fight for the challenger.

On the other hand, Canelo Alvarez has fought once against light-heavy contender Sergey Kovalev and won the WBO world title. Since then, Alvarez has had three different fights at super middleweight.

The Mexican champ last fought and stopped Billy Joe Saunders in May 2021. This matchup at the light-heavyweight division could be a fresh test for the multi-division champion and the P4P king. Who do you want Canelo Alvarez to face next?
