BLUNDER! Chair Umpire Miscalculates Games for Balls-Change During Daniil Medvedev and Marin Cilic Clash at Wimbledon Championships 2021

The first-week of Wimbledon has already ensured a lot of entertainment and drama for fans to witness and be excited for the next week of the grand slam. One of the final matches to be played before the start of Manic Monday was between Daniil Medvedev and Marin Cilic.

In a surprising turn of events, it was Cilic who took a commanding lead in the first two sets and almost appeared to be winning the contest. Even though Medvedev was every bit capable of making a comeback, his win-loss record from two sets down wasn’t great.

Just when the Croatian was taking away the match from Medvedev, the Russian proved why he was world number two and took command of the match. Also, Cilic’s dip in level helped Daniil to ascertain control back into the match.

After leveling the match at two sets all, the Russian cruised in the decider as he got a double-break against Marin Cilic and raced to a quick lead of 5-0.

At this moment, there was confusion with regards to change in balls as the umpire seemed to have forgotten about the need to use new balls on-court.

Cilic was visibly confused whereas Medvedev seemed to be enjoying the moment with the crowd joining the banter as well. Even before that, umpire Louise Engzell had a rough time at the office as the Russian constantly complained about the sun hitting his face directly.

Engzell suggested Medvedev to wear a cap at the change of ends. The world number two followed but couldn’t continue with it as he found the hat uncomfortable.

Even towards the end of the match, Louise Engzll seemed to be counting the score manually. There were a couple of instances this week when the technology failed the umpires on-court. For a couple of late-night matches, the electronic line-calling didn’t work as the umpires had to go with the line judges call.

All in all, it was a crazy end to an amazing week of tennis at Wimbledon Championships as the play will be halted on Sunday. The round of 16 matches will begin from Monday.
