The women’s singles draw at the Wimbledon Championships this year has proved to be unpredictable with a lot of notable names on the WTA tour getting eliminated in the first week itself. But, top seeds Ashleigh Barty and Aryna Sabalenka have reached the quarter-finals amidst a few tumbles along the way.

As of Monday, all the fourth round women’s singles matches got over and the quarter-finals are due to be played on Tuesday. Alongside the top seeds, several other players like Ajla Tomljanovic, Ons Jabeur, Karolina Pliskova, etc. will also be in action.

World number one Ash Barty, who had a dominant run at SW19 so far, defeated the Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova in the pre-quarters. Krejcikova put up a tough fight in the first set but the Aussie used her slice backhand to good effect to clinch the set, 7-5.

Even in the second, the Aussie was resilient enough to break the serve of Krejcikova and won the match, 7-5,6-3. Barty’s quarter-final opponent will be compatriot, Ajla Tomljanovic.

Tomljanovic, who had a tough three-set battle filled with enough drama against Jelena Ostapenko, won the first set in her fourth round contest against the British qualifier Emma Raducanu.

As the Aussie was cruising in the second set with a 3-0 lead, Raducanu retired midway from the match due to medical reasons. From what could be seen on-court, it seemed as if the youngster was overwhelmed by the occasion and couldn’t handle the intense pressure and attention given to her over the past few days.

With Raducanu’s retirement, Tomljanovic will face Barty for the first time in her career. Even though Ash Barty enters the contest as the clear favorite, the pressure defeating a compatriot might play in her mind.

Ajla Tomljanovic has been in winning positions before at various matches in slams and lost her way from there. However, she has been consistent at SW19 so far. Despite limited options at her disposal, Tomljanovic can still hurt Barty with her defense and put up a fighting spirit till the end.

Prediction: Ashleigh Barty to win in straight sets
