After Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu Opens Up on Her “Overwhelming” Experience With Media

In 2019, Canadian Bianca Andreescu lifted her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open as a 19-year-old. A year before that, Japanese Naomi Osaka had attained the same feat but as a 20-year-old. Interestingly, both defeated tennis queen Serena Williams in the final and became overnight sensations.

As a result, Bianca is the closest example to Naomi when it comes to dealing with the pressure of being a young champion in tennis. Moreover, the now-21-year-old Canadian revealed how the press has changed since the end of her breakthrough run.

In essence, while Osaka previously stated that the amount of attention she got was ‘ridiculous,’ Andreescu used the word ‘overwhelming.’

Besides, injuries and the pandemic outbreak derailed Andreescu‘s career, which was previously on an upward trajectory. With that, she noticed the change in the media outlook.

“At first it was great because I was winning and doing well … (but) then it got to a point where I got injured again, I didn’t play in 2020, so there were a lot of times media (would) say rude things,” Bianca said.

Despite the long break, the Canadian is looking forward to being regular on the tennis tour. Although she has a 12-7 record in 2021, including one final in Miami, she has an extensive scope to get back to her winning ways.

Next up, the 21-year-old will play at the National Bank Open 2021, previously called the Rogers Cup, as the defending champion.

The current World No.2 Osaka will also join Andreescu in the players’ field in Toronto. Indeed, it is one of the crucial tournaments in preparations for the ultimate prize, the US Open 2021.

Recently, the home-favorite Osaka lost in the third round to Marketa Vondrousova at Tokyo Olympics 2020. Andreescu, on the other hand, did not participate in the Games following a heartbreaking opening-round exit at Wimbledon.

Unquestionably, both are the most promising future athletes in the WTA. On top of that, high expectations stand on their shoulders for the upcoming hard court season.

Hopefully, both of them will find the desired comfort and success on the tennis courts soon. It would be amazing to see both of them compete for titles in the upcoming tournaments.
