2021 Scottish Open – Where Is It Played and Everything You Need To Know About the Venue

The 2021 Scottish Open is scheduled for July 8-11. And just like the previous year, the tournament will be played at Renaissance Club, North Berwick, Scotland. Even though this is a non-major tournament, the Scottish Open has attracted star players due to the subsequent Open Championship. So here’s all that you need to know about the venue hosting Scottish Open.

The Renaissance Club is a small and one of the most straightforward courses on the European Tour. It is also one of the shortest layouts with a combined par of 71. Designed by Tom Doak out of a pine forest, 2021 marks the third year of this course as a host for the Scottish Open. The total measurement of the course is around 7,293 yards.

What are the challenges at the Renaissance Club?

The major challenge at the Renaissance Club is the weather. The scoring is mainly based on the wind and weather that nature provides throughout the week. The seaside golf course is known for its wild winds and can affect the play immensely. The greens are slightly undulating and have bentgrass which is quick but also can be read easily.

But everything on the course depends on the weather. If there is rain around, then the conditions might become soft. And this is what disappointed Rory McIlroy in 2019 as he suddenly went down on the leaderboard because of the sudden change in conditions.

So apart from the weather, the roughs could create a headache for the players as they might always get a flyer lie. The flyer lie will restrict the backspin, and the ball will roll further as it lands. So finding fairways and remaining on the greens is going to be a crucial factor for players.

Few bunkers on the green side are slightly deep, making it difficult for the players to get the ball out. And if the sand becomes soft due to rain, it will add to the misery and will be a real headache for the golfers.
