“Wanting to Sit Down for a Picnic”: Belinda Bencic Reacts After Winning an Insane Point of the Year at WTA Berlin 2021

On a day where top players from both the WTA and ATP tours faced shock exits, Swiss athlete Belinda Bencic successfully overcame Petra Martic in the second-round of Berlin Open 6-3,6-4.

Bencic, who had a below-par clay-court season with defeats against Paula Badosa, Nadia Podoroska, etc. has made a solid start to her grass-court campaign in Berlin.

It was a straight-forward match for Bencic as she used dominated Martic from the baseline. Her first-serves were accurate as she made 68% of them in comparison to just 36% from her opponent.

After winning the first set, the Swiss player continued her baseline aggression in the second as Martic struggled to keep the ball in play. Also, a lot of unforced errors from the Croatian’s racquet ensured a comfortable victory for Bencic in the end.

Towards the tail end of the second set, Bencic, who had two break points, played an unusual rally at the net and fell on the court during a smash. Martic wasn’t able to take advantage of the fall and let the Swiss get away with a backhand winner.

The Swiss player also responded to the video posted by WTA on twitter.

When you feel like wanting to sit down for a picnic during the match”, wrote the Swiss.

Largely a hard-court player, Bencic produced good results on grass as well. In 2019, she reached the finals of Mallorca Open after battling past Angelique Kerber, Amanda Anisimova, and Shelby Rogers. Bencic lost in a tight three-setter to Sofia Kenin.

Earlier in 2015, Belinda Bencic defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in WTA Eastbourne International to win her first grass-court title.

The Swiss player faces Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarter-finals of Berlin Open. The tournament already saw the defeats of top players like Aryna Sabalenka, Elina Svitolina, and Bianca Andreescu in one day.

While other seeded players like Victoria Azarenka and Garbine Muguruza are still in the main draw, it goes without saying that both the natural surfaces – clay and grass have always been producing several upsets at the top.

Just like the French Open, will there be a new women’s singles champion crowned at Wimbledon this year?
