New England Patriots Expect Cam Newton To Shine in 2021 Thanks to ‘Different Grasp of Offense’

The New England Patriots are looking to turn their fortunes around in 2021. The franchise synonymous with Head Coach Bill Belichick endured an uncharacteristically disappointing campaign last year transitioning from quarterback Tom Brady.

While the Patriots would’ve hoped for an easier passing of the torch from Brady to free-agent signing Cam Newton, things didn’t quite go according to plan.

The Patriots went 7-9, their first losing season since 2000. Their dismal run also saw them miss the playoffs, something that became second nature to the franchise under Belichick.

While Newton has been signed on for another season, the Patriots have brought in a more permanent future alternative. Drafting Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the 15th overall pick, Newton will not have it as easy as he did back in 2020.

The Patriots though have maintained that Newton will be their starter for 2021. And it seems that the quarterback is making sure that he makes use of this rare second chance.

Cam Newton better accustomed to New England Patriots playbook

Patriots’ long-time offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said that Newton has been putting in the extra hours over the offseason. Better accustomed to the Patriots’ playbook, McDaniels hinted that a notable difference can be expected from the quarterback’s output in 2021.

“He came back this year at a much different position,” McDaniels said according to a tweet by NFL reporter Phil Perry.

Now working on refining his craft, McDaniels said the QB has a better understanding of the many terms part of the Pats’ playbook.

“He has a different grasp of the offense, a different understanding of the terminology. Now we’re working on refining the precision, the details.”

The Patriots too have been making sure that their quarterbacks have some elite targets to aim at. Signing multiple free agents such as wide receiver Nelson Agholor and tight ends Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, the Pats will have a new-look offense for 2021.

While the switch to Mac Jones is inevitable, Newton can hold off the rookie from getting his debut if he manages to click with his new teammates.

With the Patriots unlikely to resign him beyond next season, the 2015 NFL MVP will look to improve his stock before hitting the free agency market in 2o22.
