Aussie UFC star chokes opponent unconscious

Australian UFC star Casey O'Neill beat Lara Procopio in Las Vegas on Sunday (AEST) by choking her unconscious.

O'Neill locked in a rear naked choke on a standing Procopio midway through the third round. She held the submission until the Brazilian collapsed to the Octagon floor.

Referee Chris Tognoni waved off the bout after realising that Procopio had lost consciousness.

O'Neill, 23, raised her hands in triumph, having improved to 7-0 with her second win in the UFC.

"I was just stoked to choke out a blackbelt," Scotland-born O'Neill said post-fight.

"Hopefully, my coach likes that s--t … I'd like to have a couple months off right now to get better."

O'Neill's submission win showed off the breadth of her skills. She won her UFC debut in February with a second-round TKO of American Shana Dobson.

O'Neill moved to Australia at about age 10, with her family settling on the Gold Coast. She launched her MMA career out of Queensland, flying both the Australian and Scottish flags at her fights.
