$4.8m star 'one of the laziest footballers around'

Carlton recruit Zac Williams "is one of the laziest footballers going around", AFL great Jonathan Brown has said in a searing bake.

Williams, signed by the Blues for $4.8 million over six years after a trade from GWS, had another underwhelming performance as Carlton lost to his old club.

Brown was asked if the Giants hade deliberately tried to expose and work-over Williams and the Lions legend pulled no punches.

"I know they did. I tell you what, Zac Williams is one of the laziest footballers going around at the moment," Brown said on Fox Footy.

"Don't worry, there's about 100 pieces of vision we've left on the cutting room floor. We could've gone through it for the next half an hour and showed it. We could've really hurt his reputation. I'm just verballing it for you.

"That bloke has come to the Carlton footy club, paid that sort of money, he needs to turn up in better shape and get himself fit and turn up and put in a better effort, especially on defence."

Carlton's latest defeat left them 14th on the ladder. Coach David Teague is under severe pressure to hold his job, while the roster is under scrutiny.

St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt said that Carlton's best players, despite being young, needed to take charge of the team's culture.

"You've got high-paid players, you've got the core of the Carlton side and their really good young leaders – it's [Patrick] Cripps, it's [Harry] McKay, it's [Sam] Walsh, so younger players that probably are a little bit more introverted. If I'm David Teague, I'm bringing them in, getting them in and I'm saying: 'OK, the senior players, they're not leading the way with their defensive efforts,," Riewoldt said on Fox Footy.

"They have to drive it. These young players that are the core, that are the real honest workers within that football club, they're the ones that have to drive it.

"Otherwise guess what? They're not going to be a good football side for a long period – and those young blokes, they want success."

Brown cited Champion Data stats that showed Carlton gave opposing sides the easiest path from the defensive 50 to the forward 50.

The Blues laid just 41 tackles to the Giants' 78 on Saturday. They now have a 4-9 record this season.
