Postecoglou in line for 'massive' Euro gig

Former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou is reportedly in advanced talks to take over Scottish football giant Celtic.

In a stunning turn of events for the former A-League coach, The Telegraph's John Percy reports that Celtic are close to confirming the Australian will take over as manager.

Postecoglou,55, has had success with every job he has taken, having previously managed Australia, Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar - winning two A-League championships with the latter.

He also won the Asian Cup with the Socceroos in 2015 and the J-League Title with his current club, Yokohama FM, in 2019. The Australian's reputation internationally has been helped by the fact he took Yokohama to the top in only his second year with the club, who were struggling before his arrival.

Postecoglou has been tipped by several UK bookmakers as the favourite to take the top job at Celtic, after ex-Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was ruled out of contention.

"We can now confirm that Eddie will not be joining the club, for reasons outside both his and Celtic's control," the club said on Friday.

The appointment would be huge for the Australian and Socceroos star Tom Rogic who still plays for the Scottish team.

Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou's foray into Europe would fly the flag for Australia since Kevin Muscat and Tony Popovic were axed after spending some time managing in Europe.

Muscat was sacked after just 14 games as head coach of Belgian Pro League team Sint-Truidense while Popovic parted ways with Greek Super League 2 side Xanthi FC after nine matches.
