“I Get Goosebumps”: Novak Djokovic Opens Up on His Favorite Memory at Wimbledon Championships

Novak Djokovic is currently amidst his clay-court season and has reached the Italian Open 2021 quarterfinals. Nonetheless, he was more than happy to reveal his favorite Wimbledon memory during his recent post-match press conference.

Of his 18 Grand Slams, the Serb has won five in Wimbledon; he is also the reigning champion of the tournament. Aside from that, he shared that it has always been his dream tournament.

Novak Djokovic on his childhood dream and favorite Wimbledon memory

Firstly, World No.1 Novak Djokovic revealed that he gets goosebumps even at the mention of Wimbledon. Moreover, he humbly credited his fortune for bringing him many wonderful moments on Wimbledon center court.

But the interviewer had asked him to pick one favorite memory, which the Serbian ace found difficult. Looking back, Djokovic expressed what Wimbledon meant for him.

“When I was a five-year-old boy, I was dreaming of winning Wimbledon one day,” Djokovic said. “That was always that dream tournament. Any dream Wimbledon trophy counts as multiple trophies of other tournaments, for me.”

Remarkably, the Serbian later realized his childhood dream and became the hero of his nation. Hence, Djokovic picked his first Wimbledon trophy as his favorite memory, calling it the most special one.

He said, “2011, the first one is always the most special. In 2011, when I won and managed to clinch No.1 rankings for the first time and going back to my country and celebrating with people on the streets, that was probably once in a lifetime experience that I will nurture and remember forever.”

The Serbian ace dominated his arch-rival Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to win his first. Interestingly, Novak also won the Australian Open and the US Open that same year.

Djokovic eyes most Grand Slams record ahead

After surpassing Roger Federer in Most Weeks Spent at World No.1, Djokovic confessed that his next goal is to win as many major titles. He is presently two Grand Slams behind both Federer and Nadal.

But in a matter of two months, he will have a chance to level with them. However, his primary focus will be on French Open and stopping Nadal.

Additionally, the French Open is two weeks before Wimbledon than the usual three. For this matter, Djokovic raised concerns and highlighted how it messes with the calendar.

All in all, having won the Australian Open 2021, Djokovic will love to win another Grand Slam in 2021. Only time will tell us if he manages to do it or not. For now, the defending champion will face Greek No.1 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Italian Open 2021 quarterfinals.
