Essendon will head to Perth two days earlier than planned after Victoria's new COVID-19 outbreak forced the club to make a last-minute dash out of Melbourne.
The club was notified by the AFL late last night of the decision to leave for Perth this morning, with the Bombers currently scheduled to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.
The last-minute move comes after it was revealed Melbourne's COVID-19 outbreak had grown to 15 cases overnight.
Essendon football boss Josh Mahoney confirmed players and staff will be tested once they touch down in Perth before going into isolation where they will await their test results.
"We got a call at eight o'clock last night to say our plans to travel on Friday had changed and we're travelling this morning at 10.45 and going to Perth," Mahoney told SEN.
"Just on the advice of the AFL and the WA government, so it was a bit of a quick ring around to the players and staff.
"We'll be on a flight in a few hours' time.
"We will just travel and when we land we'll get tested. When we land, we'll isolate and wait for our test results.
"We'll then go into our normal preparation for our game against the Eagles on Saturday."
