McGuire to leave in three-player swap deal

A three-way player swap is being considered that may ease the problems of three injury-hit clubs.

The swap being proposed would see Cowboys veteran Josh McGuire move to St George Illawarra in coming weeks, with Dragons halfback Adam Clune heading in the opposite direction.

That would see the Cowboys give halfback Jake Clifford an early release to join the Knights, the club he has already signed up for next season.

Cowboys star Josh McGuire is tackled by Dragons forward Trent Merrin.

McGuire has ruffled some feathers at the Cowboys and the club is unlikely to stand in his way of a move south.

He has worked with Dragons coach Anthony Griffin at the Broncos and the pair have a good relationship.

Clune couldn't break into the Dragons' side until the back-to-form Ben Hunt broke his leg last week.

Hunt's injury could delay the three-way swap as Clune has stepped up in his absence, selected at halfback alongside Corey Norman.

The Knights are injury ravaged in the halves and would welcome Clifford as soon as possible.

Some dominoes still have to fall into place, but there is work being done behind the scenes to make the three-way move happen in coming weeks.
