COVID chaos hits Tasmanian Supercars round

Queensland's COVID-19 outbreak has forced Supercars to reschedule the upcoming round in Tasmania.

The Tasmania SuperSprint, scheduled for April 10-11 at Symmons Plains, has been pushed back a week, with lockdown in Brisbane and border closures both hitting the sport.

The Red Bull Racing team is based in Brisbane, while Dick Johnson Racing and Matt Stone Racing are in the Gold Coast region.

The Tasmanian border was this week closed to anyone who has been in a high-risk area in the last 14 days, with the Brisbane local government area currently deemed high-risk.

"In light of the current COVID-19 situation in Brisbane, Supercars has made the precautionary decision to delay the upcoming Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint by one week," Supercars said in a statement.

"The event will now be held across the weekend of 17-18 April. All tickets already purchased for the event will remain valid and will be moved to the new event dates.

"As has been the case since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Supercars staff and race teams will comply with all applicable government regulations in travelling to and staging the event.

"Supercars thanks all fans for their ongoing patience and apologises for any inconvenience caused. We look forward to welcoming everyone to a safe event in Tasmania in the coming weeks."

It's the second straight year the Tasmanian round of the championship has been impacted by COVID-19.

The 2020 round, originally set down for early April, was postponed with the country in lockdown and not able to be rescheduled, meaning it's been two years since the category visited Symmons Plains.

Holden's Shane van Gisbergen currently leads the championship, having won all five races contested so far.

He's 150 points ahead of teammate Jamie Whincup in the title race.
