Latrell Mitchell locks in contract extension

South Sydney fullback Latrell Mitchell has ended speculation about his future, inking a two-year contract extension with the Rabbitohs.

Mitchell is now signed with Souths until the end of the 2023 season.

"I'm really happy about staying here at Souths. It's become home for me and my family," the 23-year-old said on Monday.

The Rabbitohs are among the favourites to win the premiership this year, in what will be Wayne Bennett's final year at the club. Having one of their key cog's futures sorted before a ball has been kicked will no doubt help morale around Redfern.

"I feel like we have a great squad of players here and top coaches and I'm really confident that we can achieve what we want to achieve in the coming seasons," Mitchell said.

"It's a special club and a special group of players and it means a lot to me and my family to represent South Sydney."

After leaving the Roosters at the end of 2019, Mitchell initially struggled at his new position, but had turned in several fantastic performances in the No.1 jersey before a hamstring injury ended his season.

"We want to create more history for this club and its people and I can't wait to be part of it," Mitchell said.

There were no signs of rust on Saturday night in the NRL All Stars clash, with Mitchell showcasing his kicking skills to set up a try for club teammate Alex Johnston.

Bunnies stars combine for slick Indigenous try

"Everyone recognises the natural talent that Latrell has, however not everyone gets to see the hard work he puts into his game at training and in the gym," Souths' head of football Mark Ellison said.

"We saw him apply himself to learning to play fullback at the top level and we've seen him work hard to rehabilitate his hamstring injury as well.

"He is a community leader amongst Indigenous people and he has a strong voice on issues that affect us all."

The Rabbitohs will open their season at AAMI Park against the Storm, hoping to break the league's worst hoodoo. Since the Storm's inception, the Bunnies have never won in Melbourne.
