Khawaja turns heads again as recall potential grows

Usman Khawaja has once again reminded selectors of his worth as he led Queensland to a four-wicket One-Day Cup win over Tasmania on Monday.

As Australia embarked on a five-match T20 series against New Zealand, Khawaja's brave 93 to rescue Queensland served as a timely reminder of what the batsman is capable of should his services be required atop the national order.

The left-hander's day was eventually ended when he edged Nathan Ellis behind, where Australian Test captain Tim Paine claimed a simple take.

But it was his 87-run partnership with Joe Burns that formed the bedrock of Queensland's impressive innings, as each of their top seven made it to double figures.

Khawaja's latest big-score comes just two days after he smashed a clinical 115 not out in the Sheffield Shield.

Khawaja, who hasn't been sighted for Australia since the 2019 Ashes in England, had his name cast in the hat prior to Australia's devastating Border-Gavaskar loss to India over the summer.

While selectors were unwilling to return to the crafty opener, his latest knock proves that there's still plenty fire at the crease.
