Huge step for Brisbane's 2032 Olympic bid

The International Olympic Committee will tonight install Brisbane as the preferred candidate for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Inside the Games has reported.

The respected Olympic news website says the Queensland bid for 2032 has been the standout and the IOC's Future Host Summer Commission will recommend it to the executive board, which includes Australian Olympic Committee president and IOC vice-president John Coates.

Should the board approve the findings of the Commission, Queensland will continue as the sole negotiator with the IOC as the two parties work toward an official unveiling of the 2032 host city. The reveal could even take place ahead of the postponed Tokyo Games.

Olympics to look very different: AOC boss

"The Brisbane, Queensland candidature is following the process approved by IOC members in session in 2019," the AOC said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We are aware that the IOC executive board will receive presentations from a number of commissions at its meeting tonight, including the Future Host Commission.

"We are not privy to that presentation but look forward to any advice in due course."

Brisbane lord mayor Adrian Schrinner last month told the Sydney Morning Herald the region was on the cusp of advancing talks with the IOC as the governing body looks to finalise plans beyond Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028.

"It's very exciting. All three levels of government are on board and working feverishly," Schrinner said.

"There was a lull for a period last year where there wasn't so much talk about the Olympics, but that didn't mean things weren't continuing behind the scenes. Now, it's just a matter of getting down to targeted discussions and hopefully make it a reality.

"That is something that could happen any time now. I think 2021 will be the critical year for this … I really do think that. It may not be that a decision is made this year but ... a decision could be made at any stage from now on, essentially."

Olympians push for vaccination

Under the new bidding system, there isn't a major reveal of the type in which Sydney was awarded the 2000 Games. Potential hosts instead engage in continuous dialogue with the IOC in an attempt to reduce the enormous expense attached to making a Games bid.

It's believed the success of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games has boosted Brisbane's chance of landing the 2032 Olympics.

Australia has hosted two Olympic Games since the first staging of the modern Olympiad in Greece in 1896, with Melbourne having hosted in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.
