Glenn retains Broncos captaincy amid rebuild

Club veteran Alex Glenn will retain the Broncos captaincy for 2021, with the club confirming the news ahead of his testimonial match this weekend.

The 267-game forward endured a difficult first season in leading the Broncos last year but was time-again singled out for his commitment and determination amid the side's wooden spoon finish.

Walters has shown faith in Glenn, handing him the armband amid his top-down rebuild to lead the club back into the upper-echelon of the NRL.

"It was a tough year for the club last year in many ways and the captaincy position for Alex as well, but this year we're going to make it a great season for him," Walters said.

Alex Glenn.

"He typifies what a Broncos player is and every week gives his all regardless of who he's playing and where he's playing.

"Off the field, he's a great dad and family person. He's got a lot of respect for the people in the community and is squeaky clean behaviour-wise as well.

"We want to get around and support him to give him a year to remember. I was fortunate throughout my career to captain the Broncos and I want Alex to enjoy those same experiences."

The announcement comes just in time for Glenn's testimonial match on Saturday against the Cowboys at Dolphin stadium.

Glenn was honoured to be handed another crack at the captain's role after his debut campaign as skipper was cruelled by injury.

"There were a lot of hard lessons [last year], it was very frustrating each week to go out there and still not come up with the two points," Glenn said.

"We [finished] the lowest with the wooden spoon but that's got to fuel your flame to come out and get some respect back, to go out and compete with the best."
