Sam Burgess' younger brother Tom has spoken publicly about his sibling's off-field issues, saying that he would stand by him and praising his footballing intelligence.
The Rabbitohs' prop, who is the only one of the four still playing for the Redfern club, was happy to have his thoughts broadcast despite the interview being recorded before it was revealed that Sam had been pulled over, drug tested and charged with driving offences.
"I'm always supportive, he's my brother, no matter what happens - and I'm sure the club will too," he told Nine News' Danny Weidler.
Burgess was previously stood down from his roles as a coaching assistant at Souths and commentator at Fox Sports after he was charged over the argument at former father-in-law Mitch Hooke's property near Bowral in 2019.
He was found guilty, recording a conviction and sentenced to a two-year good behaviour bond earlier this month.
The Rabbitohs are among the favourites to win the premiership, with Tom crediting his brother's coaching work for their improvements in the back half of last year.
"He was great for us last year, coming in and working with the forwards and even with the leaders," he said.
"I think he just brings mentality, is a good one, resilience, that sort of thing. He's a great footy mind as well. He watches a lot of footy, he's always had that sort of coaching brain.
"He gets the forwards and does specific drills with us that are really current, I suppose. He's only been out of the game one year, he knows what's good."
Tom said that he wouldn't be shocked at all to see his brother as an NRL coach one day.
"Not at all no. You might see him get a few more greys on the side there... but I could see him doing that down the track. He's definitely got the headspace for it."
