Legend rips North's pursuit of coaching great

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd says North Melbourne's pursuit of legendary coach Paul Roos is a "concern" as the clubs looks to bolster its support staff around head coach Rhyce Shaw.

Following a disappointing 2020 season that saw the club finish 17th on the AFL ladder, North Melbourne responded by delisting 11 players in a bid to rebuild.

The club also informed star forward Ben Brown, who kicked over 60 goals for the Kangaroos in 2017, 2018 and 2019, to look for a new club.

With a rebuild getting underway, reports emerged earlier this week that the club would pursue Roos in a part-time role to assist Shaw as he looks to rebound from the horror season.

According to AFL reporter Damian Barrett, the club put out a "feeler" to the premiership-winning coach after letting go of six assistant coaches, while also adding Swans assistant coach John Blakey to the squad.

"They got rid of six assistant coaches with Jade Rawlings the high-profile among those," Barrett told Nine's Sunday Footy Show.

"They will introduce John Blakey who has been at the Swans for a very long time working closely with John Longmire.

"They've put out a feeler to Paul Roos to work as a part-time mentor to Rhyce Shaw who clearly struggled.

"It's a consideration for Roos.

"He's currently in the United Staes but it will be a target of the Kangaroos to try and bolster what they're doing around Rhyce Shaw."

Responding to the report, Lloyd said the North Melbourne's decision to reach out to Roos was a "concern" while urging the club to only implement staff on a full-time basis.

"I don't like that," Lloyd added.

"You're either in or out. He wouldn't come cheap Paul Roos.

"You're getting John Blakey, so I don't understand why. They've got to be all in North Melbourne with a full-time team.

"You either coach or you can't.

"He's coming into his second year of coaching, and yet they're having to get someone like Paul Roos which is a concern."
