Wimbledon Championships 2021 Set to Get Underway Regardless of Spectator Policy

Wimbledon will return in 2021 after the organizers were forced to cancel this year’s edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheduled date as of now is 28th June 2021. What is surprising is that sources have confirmed that the Grand Slam will take place with or without spectators.

This is the first time since the Second World War that the tournament didn’t take place in a year. With the French Open 2020 postponed to early September and October, fans were hopeful that Wimbledon would take place later in the year as well. That was not the case, however. And now, the organizers have announced it will be played between 28th June to 11th July 2021.

Former World No.1 Andy Murray has also expressed his desire for Wimbledon to take place. The Brit surely wants to play in his homeland and the event where he has picked up two trophies. The 2-time Wimbledon champion recently lost to Stan Wawrinka in straight sets at Round 1 of the French Open 2020.

A great Initiative by Wimbledon in 2020

As Wimbledon did not take place in 2020, The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) decided to divert some funds to help those most affected by the pandemic. The money will help vulnerable people at the local, national, and international levels. This included financial help of £1.2m, donations of strawberries, towels, and balls intended for The Championships, and the distribution of daily hot meals to the needy ones.

The managing body also allocated the prize money of the tournament to 620 players. These were players whose world ranking was sufficient to gain them entry into Wimbledon 2020 by direct acceptance or through the qualifying event.

The AELTC also began to consider scenarios regarding the event in 2021. They also watched other Grand Slam events closely and to learn how they were managing them. The body also took a decision that it would not be staging any Public Ballot for Wimbledon 2021.

The stage is thus set for the 134th edition of Grand Slam in 2021. Fans will be excited to witness yet another electrifying Grand Slam on the grass next year.
