In sports, women are often neglected when they become mothers. Tennis is no different. Mothers are scrutinized more for their gameplay than usual. Be it Kim Clijsters or Serena Williams, everyone has had their share of post-motherhood criticisms. However, times are changing and US Open 2020 is embracing a positive change in the tournament.
US Open 2020 Celebrates The Mothers
To turn the tides, the US Open authorities have shared a video to celebrate the mothers of the tournament. Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and Tsvetana Pironkova made history on Monday by becoming the first trio of mothers to reach the quarterfinals of the same Grand Slam event.
The video shows various snippets of the three players and their children. Serena Williams gave birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017. Azarenka has one son named Leo, born in 2016. Pironkova married in 2016 and two years later gave birth to her son, Alexander.

Serena Williams, Azarenka, and Pironkova Speak About Their Ambitions
Serena Williams asserted how proud she is of mothers everywhere. “I’m so happy that there are so many moms in the event, obviously, because I’m one. I just have a totally new respect for moms.”
Serena avenged her Cincinnati loss to Sakkari to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2020 US Open. She is eyeing a record-equalling 24th Major.
She will face another celebrated mother, unranked Pironkova, who defeated Alize Cornet on Monday. Pironkova is playing her first Major in three years. and is looking forward to her match against Williams.
“Playing such a champion, such a legend of the game, it is a tremendous honor. I’m really looking forward to that match because I know the feeling is going to be very special. I will try to do my best, and I can’t wait.”
Azarenka, on the other hand, is very grateful for the opportunity to play at the Grand Slam. She will face Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. She is playing her first Major quarterfinal since she became a mother. Also, a few days ago she held the Cincinnati Open title, and she has carried her form over into the Slam.
