The Western and Southern Open 2020 is nearing completion and will end this Sunday. Despite strict regulations and playing without the crowds, the quality of tennis has remained the same. The World No.10 Naomi Osaka seems to be the favorite to win the Masters title.
The draw for the much-awaited US Open 2020 has been announced. The World No.1 Ashleigh Barty and the defending champion Bianca Andreescu have withdrawn from this year’s US Open. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many top-10 ranked players including Elina Svitolina and Kiki Bertens have pulled out from the grand slam.
The US Open is scheduled from 31st August to 13th September and will be played under closed doors. Presenting the women’s singles draw for US Open 2020.
Karolína Plíšková gets an easy run to the semifinal
To start off on the most interesting aspect, Pliskova and Naomi Osaka are in the same half. This puts them on course for a blockbuster semi-final. The number-one seeded Pliskova has a simple route to the semi-final. She could potentially face Petra Martić from Croatia in the quarterfinal.
The fourth-seeded Naomi Osaka who won the US Open in 2018 is likely to play against fellow rival Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinal. The duo last faced each other in the final of the WTA Championships last year where Naomi defeated Kvitova in an epic match. Petra, seeded-sixth, lost her very first match at Cincinnati Masters and will look to win first US Open title.
Serena Williams faces a tough draw at Flushing Meadows
The 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams is eyeing Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles. The American, seeded-third faces a stern challenge at this year’s US Open. Serena will potentially face Maria Sakkari in the fourth round, who ousted Williams in the round-of-16 at the Western and Southern Open.
The six-time US Open champion Williams will probably meet the seventh-seeded Madison Keys in the quarterfinals. Sofia Kenin, seeded-two, might set up a high-octane semifinal against Serena Williams.
Sofia Kenin, the reigning Australian Open champion, is one of the favorites to lift the title. Kenin is likely to face the World No.14 Elise Mertens in the fourth round.
If Serena manages to navigate through her draw, she will most probably face Naomi Osaka in the final. Williams has a chance to create history by winning a record seventh US Open title.
