“Getting better up front” – Baker Mayfield Raring To Go Ahead of 2020 Season

Baker Mayfield was one of two University of Oklahoma graduates to become the number one NFL pick back in 2017. He was followed by dual-threat quarterback Kyler Murray in 2018 who went to Arizona Cardinals. While at OSU, Mayfield developed quite a name for himself. He ended his senior year with 4,627 passing yards and completed 43 TDs against just six interceptions.

His efforts that year earned him the Heisman Trophy for a record third-highest percentage in the award’s history. In addition to that, Mayfield became the only walk-on player to bag the coveted award. There were great expectations from the young lad when he arrived in Cleveland in 2018. But things have not gone as planned for both parties involved.

Mayfield’s pass completion percentage dropped from 63.8 to 59.4 over his first two seasons in the NFL. He threw seven more interceptions as compared to the year before in 2019. Despite a steady decline, the 25-year old is eyeing a strong comeback this year with the Browns.

Third-year quarterback Baker Mayfield looking forward to 2020 season

The former Oklahoma Sooners man spoke on Browns Live: Training Camp updates.

He said, “I’ve got to go through my reads and do my stuff. That’s the coach’s job to call the plays and get the ball in the playmakers’ hands. I’ve got to go through and do my job and be a playmaker as well, be a ball distributor. We have guys everywhere that can make plays. It’s going to be a nice look out there with one-on-ones all over the field.

“We’re getting better up front, added some depth as everyone knows, and Coach (Bill Callahan) is doing a great job. We’re excited to get to play somebody else.”

Mayfield had two contrasting seasons with the Browns so far. After a strong start in 2018, Mayfield failed to impress last year. This will be a crucial season for the former Heisman Trophy winner. He needs to do well if he wants to remain in Cleveland beyond his rookie contract. Coach Stefanski will be keeping a close eye on Mayfield over the course of the season.
