Coniglio ripped for effort after calling team 'hopeless'

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has criticised GWS Giants captain Stephen Coniglio for an effort early in the third quarter after he called his side's performance "hopeless".

Coniglio was left incensed at half-time of the Giants' clash with the Sydney Swans, with the premiership hopefuls trailing the lowly Swans by over 20 points at the main break.

However, Cornes singled out the Giants skipper for a missed tackle on Swans superstar Luke Parker directly after the main break as being symptomatic of the Giants' problems.

"He called it 'hopeless', let's look at his first effort straight after half-time," he told Nine's AFL Sunday Footy Show.

"This is 15 seconds into the third quarter and that's Parker v Coniglio. So, if it was hopeless from his teammates, that was the effort that he just had to be better.

"You can say it's harsh, but as the captain of a footy club, you've got to stick that and make a statement to start the third quarter if you go public and call everyone hopeless.

"We all like Stephen Coniglio, but that effort he'd be pretty embarrassed about."

While Cornes wasn't critical of Coniglio being candid in his half-time interview with Fox Footy, he said the skipper needed to set an example after the main break.

"I'm not critical of him being honest, I love it, but you're the captain of the footy club, you've got to stick that tackle, there's no excuses for it," he said.

"Take the comments away from the actual effort and you tell me he just has to make that tackle as the captain of a footy club that is under the pump.

"When you make comments like that you've got to back it up and in that instance, he didn't."
