World Cup hero's 'disgraceful' Twitter dumping

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has slammed the treatment of World Cup hero Liam Plunkett, who found out about his axing from the squad via social media.

Vaughan labelled the actions of team management and selectors as a "disgrace" and a throwback to a bygone era.

Plunkett hasn't played for England in any form of the game since the World Cup final against New Zealand last July, when he picked up 3-42, including the prize wicket of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

The 35-year-old isn't bitter about his exclusion from the side, acknowledging that his age means he won't be around for the 2023 World Cup.

Plunkett said he was more than happy to stand aside for someone younger, but lamented the fact he found out about his exclusion on social media.

"He won England the World Cup, with a group of players and management, and not one person rang him up. Not one person," Vaughan said on the Tuffers and Vaughan Cricket Show.

"He had to find out through Twitter.

"That doesn't happen in this era of cricket, that's a disgrace. That's poor."

Plunkett said the communication from the ECB after the World Cup wasn't up to scratch.

"I thought it was dealt with really badly, after the World Cup," the fast bowler said.

"I had a brief chat with management, they didn't really speak to me and say you're not going to be involved.

"It was a bit up in the air."

Plunkett, who played 13 Tests and 89 one-day internationals for England, said he was initially very upset about his axing.

"From all of a sudden finding out on social media that I wasn't playing, it was a massive shock. It's always a privilege to play for your country, but you thought there'd be some communication," he said.

"I was down, I was disappointed."

Plunkett's international career may not be over, however, with the possibility he could play for the USA.

He has an American wife, and hasn't closed the door on representing the Stars and Stripes.

"It would be nice be involved in some sort of cricket over there. My kids might be American, so it would be quite cool to say to them that I played for England and the US," Plunkett said.

"I'm English, and I'll always be an Englishman, but if I'm still fit and there's an opportunity to play at the highest level, why would I not take it?"
