Why Kieran Foran must change the way he plays

Canterbury Bulldogs veteran Kieran Foran is set to make his long-awaited return on Monday against the St George Illawarra Dragons. But an NRL legend believes that to ensure his longevity, Foran should adapt the way he plays rugby league.

Foran's expected round four return will also coincide with his 200th NRL match after a career repeatedly hit by injury setbacks.

Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns said that Foran may need to evolve his playing style in order to stay on the pitch and avoid yet another heartbreaking injury hurdle.

"He has to change the way he plays," Johns said in the Wide World of Sports segment Immortal Behaviour.

"Because he plays so tough, he gets right into the line and he's got no fear. But with that, he's copped so many knocks over his career.

"As a footy player you're only born with so many knocks. You can't - as a half or a five-eighth or a smaller player - continually get smashed by forwards.

"So hopefully he changes the way he plays, plays a little bit smarter."

Johns said one area where the Bulldogs have struggled without an experienced guy like Foran playing has been in the kicking game.

Johns said that will be a vital asset when the five-eighth runs back out for the Bulldogs.

"The Bulldogs - they need a half that can kick the ball," he said.

"They need to build some pressure on the end of their sets, so Kieran's number one thing in this game is, he's got to get his kicking game on."
