Tanvir surprised over appointment of Mushtaq as spin-bowling coach

Karachi: Former Pakistan pacer Tanvir Ahmed has expressed his surprise over the appointment of former leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as spin-bowling coach and mentor on England tour.

While speaking on his Youtube channel, the 41-year-old termed Mushtaq’s appointment as a “Weak choice”

“On what basis, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed him as the spin-bowling coach? Show me his performances, just because he lived in England with their national team,” he said.

“He was bowling consultant at NCA in Lahore for a year. How many bowlers did he produce and work with? PCB gave him for a year just to settled the position in NCA. His performance was zero percent there,” he added.

The 49-year-old Mushtaq worked at National Cricket Academy (NCA) till October 2018 but got associated with the West Indies team as an assistant coach and spin consultant. In December 2019, he was again appointed as the spin bowling consultant at the NCA for 120 days.

However, Tanvir appreciated the appointment of former captain Younis Khan as the batting coach of men’s team on England tour.

“On the appointment of Younis, I’m appreciating PCB because I think the person who is a champion in his expertise should be given that role,” he added.

It must be noted here that the OCB, via a press release, announced the appointments for men’s batting coach and spin bowling coach. The appointment of both the former cricketers is initially for just England’s tour.

Pakistan team has to tour England a ‘bio-secure’ tour from July to September. The tour includes three Tests and as many T20Is.
