New Wallabies coach Dave Rennie volunteers to take pay cut

New Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has reportedly agreed to a 30 per cent pay cut until the start of September as Rugby Australia struggles to deal with the financial impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

While nothing has been publicly confirmed by Rugby AU, it has bee widely reported that Rennie volunteered to take the pay cut in light of similar measures taken across the business. Rennie’s Wallabies contract doesn’t begin until July 1.

Australia’s Super Rugby players – save for Izack Rodda, Isaac Lucas and Harry Hockings – all agreed to an average 60 per cent pay cut which ends on September 1. However this will be renegotiated if and when Super Rugby AU gets the go-ahead.

Rennie himself had already accepted a similar measure through his current job at the Glasgow Warriors, as he and all other head coaches in Scotland deferred 25 per cent of their pay until September 1 due to the Scottish Rugby Union’s own financial difficulties.

Rugby Australia announced earlier this week that a third of their full-time staff had been made redundant as part of a wide-ranging, cost-saving restructure. Interim CEO Rob Clarke has indicated further cuts will follow.
