Jack Steven is in good spirits as he recovers from a stab wound and tracks toward a return to training in coming days, says Geelong captain Joel Selwood.
A police investigation into Steven's stabbing is continuing.
Details are yet to emerge about the incident, prompting a tit-for-tat between Collingwood president Eddie McGuire and various Geelong figures.
Selwood suggested he could appreciate fans' interest in the situation but the Cats would "much rather look after the person right now and take as long as what we need."
"The right people will find out and will know what's going on," Selwood told ABC Grandstand on Sunday.
"To make Jack as healthy and well as what we possibly can; we're just worried about doing that right now.
"I actually dropped a coffee over on the way to work throughout the week, just to hand it over the fence to him. Because that's about all we can do at the moment.
"He was in good spirits and on the road to recovery, which is the most important thing."
Former St Kilda star Steven was discharged from hospital on Tuesday, having undergone surgery, and is recovering at home in Lorne.
Selwood reiterated coach Chris Scott's suggestion that "it's more days rather than weeks before" Steven is back at training.
"We need him smiling when he walks in the doors at the Geelong footy club and when he's playing," Selwood said.
"We've felt that all along (he has a desire to play). At the moment he has to go through what he needs to go through.
"With not only Jack but the rest of our players, we have to put them first right now. Especially in this situation or any other guy who is going through, whether it's mental illness or anything like that."
Steven was on the cusp of AFL retirement last year, when he played seven games and took an extended break to focus on his mental health.
The midfielder, who won four best-and-fairest awards at the Saints, requested a trade to Geelong at the end of the 2019 season because he wanted to be closer to his family and friends.
