Legend calls for Dragons to make brutal Hunt call

NRL great Michael Ennis has called for St George Illawarra to drop Ben Hunt to the interchange following their big loss to the New Zealand Warriors.

The Warriors on Saturday celebrated their first victory of the NRL season with a record-making 18-0 win over St George Illawarra.

It was the first time in the NRL era a team completed more than 40 consecutive sets - and the Warriors were almost perfect making their first mistake in their 45th set.

But for the Dragons and their star halfback Hunt, it was a tough slog with the playmaker hampered through the second half with what is believed to be a boil on his leg, which was taped up, but obviously pained him as he hobbled through much of the match.

Ben Hunt

Following the loss which puts the Dragons at 0-3 for the season, Ennis called the Dragons to move Hunt to the interchange in a bid for the Queensland Maroons star to find his "confidence."

"It would be great for Ben Hunt and for his confidence to be allowed to grow, if he could get taken out of that No.7 jersey," Ennis said on Fox League.

"We can't put him at No.9 because Cameron McInnes is there and he's such a good player.

"So, the role he can play for the Dragons, is to play in that No.14 jersey and maybe put Corey Norman at halfback.

"I really think that's an option for Paul McGregor. Not to take him out of the side, I would love to see him go back into that No.14 jersey, give him some freedom, allow him to play like he does when we see him play for Australia, when we see him play for Queensland."

Warriors extend lead

Hunt is currently on contract reportedly worth $6 million over a five-year period which was signed back in January 2017.

The loss for the Dragons will also put more pressure on coach Paul McGregor to retain his position after the team finished 15th last season.

The Dragons will play Canterbury on Monday at Bankwest Stadium looking to turn their form around, while the Warriors face Penrith at Campbelltown Stadium on Friday.
