Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns has made two surprising early picks for Dally M honours.
Speaking on Nine Wide World of Sports' Immortal Behaviour segment, the NRL legend believes that Mitchell Moses could be one of the biggest winners out of a strong season for the Parramatta Eels.
"I've actually tipped Mitchell Moses to be the Dally M Player of the Year," Johns said.
"Because I think Parramatta will finish in the top four, if he goes through injury-free, halfbacks usually perform pretty well."
Moses, 26, leads four stats groups on NRL.com, as the top points-scorer (36) and goal-scorer (16), and he leads the league in all kicks (45) and kick metres (1,168). However the stat he'd rather not feature on - missed tackles - has him ranked equal-third (12).
Johns also revealed his tip for Rookie of the Year - Tex Hoy. The son of Johns' former Knights teammate, Matt Hoy, is set to finally make his debut for Newcastle this week playing at fullback with Kalyn Ponga still suspended. Johns is very upbeat about the speed and strength of the youngster and picked him to turn some heads when he steps up in the NRL.
"There's some young guys playing especially at the Knights, like Tex Hoy. He's my best mate's son. I've seen him grow up from a baby. Pumped to see him play," Johns said.
"He's a local boy that's come through the Newcastle system, played all his juniors with Newcastle. He actually got named for the Knights and then we went into isolation, so he's had to wait two months."
Johns suggested Hoy try to spread his wings in the halves however. With Ponga's spot at fullback all but sealed at the Knights, if he wants to keep playing in the NRL, he'll have to show some versatility.
"Kalyn has just extended till the end of 2027 so Tex will have to make that decision, maybe try to wear that no.6 jersey," Johns said.
Newcastle resume their 2020 NRL season on Sunday against the Penrith Panthers.
