Baseball collector pays over $1 million for star's card

A sports memorabilia collector has set a new record for the highest-priced modern-day baseball card after forking out $922,500 ($1,411,413 AUD) on a Mike Trout rookie card.

Sold on behalf of Goldin Auctions, a 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Mike Trout Red Refractor Autograph is now in the hands of one of the ultimate baseball collectors.

The card had previously sold for $400,000 ($611,995 AUD) back in May of 2018. It's the second rarest version of Trout's top card with just five copies ever produced.

Trout, 28, plays as a centre fielder for the Los Angeles Angels of the Major League Baseball (MLB).

Widely regarded as the best player in baseball at the moment with three MVPs, eight All-Star selections and seven Silver Slugger awards, it's no surprise a collector would go to extreme lengths to own a piece of history.

The card sold is also in incredible condition, receiving a gem mint 9.5 grade from Beckett Grading, while the signature earned a perfect 10.

Earlier this week, a high-end LeBron James rookie card sold for $161,716 ($247.423 AUD) on eBay.

The card, which is part of Upper Deck's 2003 Exquisite Collection, was one of 75 copies produced.
