AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has revealed that clubs will be allowed full contact training twice a week from May 25 onwards.
Teams will formally begin training from May 18, undergoing a week of non-contact training before being allowed to fully train the following week in anticipation of a return.
The AFL has already started its mass testing of the players before they return to clubs, and McLachlan revealed that players and designated officials would undergo COVID-19 swab tests twice a week and 24 hours before each contact training session, with the results expected prior to the training session.
While admitting it was unlikely, McLachlan also refused to rule out crowds being allowed back into grounds prior to the end of the season.
"Where we are today, I think the health officers and government will say we've beaten expectations," he told 3AW.
"I reckon we're in the hands of the community."
The AFL is expected to reveal its formal start date in a press conference this afternoon.
