Los Angeles Clippers coach, Doc Rivers talked about their sixth man, Lou Williams in an interview the other day. Lou Williams got traded from Houston Rockets to the Clippers in 2017 and ever since he has been part of the team. Rivers mentioned in the interview that he never thought Lou was that good. His offense came as a surprise to him.
Lou Williams has been the best 6th man for various teams
Philadelphia 76ers drafted Lou Williams in the 2005 NBA season. After playing for 7 years in the team, he was traded to Atlanta Hawks. And since then, Lou has just been part of trades. Toronto Raptors was the next team in the list for Lou in 2014. Lou has been part of Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets as well until in 2017 he was traded to Clippers in exchange for Chris Paul.

In the 2019 NBA season, Lou helped Clippers reduce the 31 point deficit against the Golden State Warriors. This tied the series 1-1 with a 135-131 win against them. He scored 36 points and 11 assists to aid the team in the biggest comeback in NBA history. In the same season, Williams was named the NBA 6th man of the year for the third time. He is only the second person along with Jamal Crawford to achieve this pedestal.
Doc Rivers seems to be really impressed with Lou

In a recent interview, Clippers coach Doc Rivers surprisingly made a statement about Williams as to not knowing about his capabilities. Doc never knew how good he was with his offense and thus never saw him as an important pick. Lou was always known as a player who was traded from one team to another since the very beginning of his career. Carrying this impression, Rivers said that he didn’t expect to find such a player in Lou.
“When we traded for Lou, I was not having Lou, I saw a guy that kept getting traded.” – Doc Rivers
The 33-year old is a scoring star off the bench and a boon for the tired first five of any team. His offense really adds to the game. But what might be the problem with Lou is that he lacks his defensive skills. This is what Rivers also said in his interview that defense is what holds him back from keeping him on the court at the end of a big game. Is this the reason, Lou Williams didn’t make it to the first five?
