Hunter breaks silence on drink-driving incident

Western Bulldogs star Lachie Hunter has been hit with a four-match ban by the club for his drink-driving incident which resulted in him crashing into four other cars last week.

Hunter has voluntarily stepped down from his role as the vice-captain of the club, as well as relinquishing his position in the player leadership group for the 2020 season.

According to a statement from the Bulldogs,

Along with the four-match ban, Hunter was hit with a $5000 fine for drink-driving and suspended fines totalling a further $15,000 for multiple breaches.

The 25-year-old broke his silence on the incident, expressing his remorse for involving young teammates Billy Gowers and Bailey Smith.

"I'd like to express my deepest apologies and regret for my actions last Thursday night," Hunter told the Bulldogs website in a video.

"I take full responsibility for what I did and the damages that I caused.

"It's never responsible to get behind the wheel after you've had a drink. Drink-driving is clearly not acceptable.

"I've let down a lot of people here: my fiance, my family, the leadership group and the club, my teammates, Billy and Bailey for dragging them into a situation that they should have never been in."

Hunter revealed that his decision to immediately step down from the leadership group and from his vice-caption position came as a result of not wanting to put his teammates in a difficult position in the future.

"After the incident, clearly I had a bit of time to reflect and decided that it was best that I step down from the vice-captain role for this year and the leadership group," he said.

"It clearly just wasn't fair on my teammates and would have put them in uncomfortable positions going forward.

"I've obviously lost the respect of a lot of people over this time and there's not a lot I can do about that right now. I can't control what I did, but I can control what I do from here."
