Greenberg's veiled swipe at NRL after exit

Todd Greenberg has broken his silence after standing down from his role as NRL CEO on Monday.

With the NRL coming under heavy criticism due to its poor financial state which led to a number of pay and staffing cuts throughout the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, Greenberg's future as league boss had been placed in serious doubt.

Two days after standing down, the former CEO admits he's now the happiest he's ever been.

"It's a great time, I'm out walking with my family, with my dogs, I don't think I've ever been happier," Greenberg told 7 News.

"I'm not (upset) at all. It's been a great journey, I've had a lovely time working with the NRL.

"(No regrets) whatsoever, I've loved every single minute of it.

For now, the NRL's chief commercial operator, Andrew Abdo, will take over the CEO duties until a permanent replacement is given the nod.

Earlier this week, Nine News reporter Danny Weidler broke the news of Greenberg's departure and said Nine's statement condemning the NRL's "bloated" front office had proven a hammer blow.

"Todd Greenberg has been under massive pressure for most of this year, his contract wasn't renewed when it was expected to be in February and now he has stood down from his position as boss of the game," Weidler reported.

"Probably the end for him came when Nine put a statement out accusing the NRL of being bloated and wasting millions and millions of dollars.

"As a result of that Greenberg has been frozen out of negotiations for the TV rights deal which has been discussed at the moment between (Nine boss) Hugh Marks, Peter V'landys and the boss of Fox Sports as well (Foxtel CEO Patrick Delaney).
