Billionaire boxer sparks claims 'money's gone'

Undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, who topped the Forbes rich list of the decade with a $1.36 billion fortune, has sparked claims he's in desperate need of money after it emerged the 43-year-old is now charging fans for online meet-and-greets.

It comes just a month after his former friend and rapper turned actor 50 Cent said the boxing great's "money's gone" and that Mayweather will "be at your local nightclub because he needs that action right now" suggesting the retired fighter is exploring ways to make money.

Adding weight to the rumours is the fact Mayweather has been flirting with a comeback to the ring or octagon for the past year and now he's made himself available for Fanmio, a website that gives fans a chance to meet their heroes online for a price.

Mayweather is offering his fans a chance for an exclusive online one-on-one chat, with packages ranging from $101 AUD all the way up to the Ultimate Package, which costs $2340 AUD and guarantees you a video chat with the boxer and three signed limited trading cards.

In a video to promote the virtual experience, Mayweather said: "I would love to invite you to Fanmio, where you can personally meet me, in a one-on-one video meet and greet.

"Now here's your chance, to meet me, no matter where you at around the world.

"You can ask me anything, ask me about all 50 fights, ask me what's my eating regiment, ask me what's my best fight, ask me what's my best knockout, ask me what I do everyday, in retirement.

"To be the best, you must always work overtime.

"This event is unbelievable, you guys don't won't to miss out, I've got some exclusive pieces I will be signing just for this event.

"I can't wait to meet you all, I want to meet your family, your friends."

Mayweather just came off a UK tour charging fans for a meet-and-greet with the five-weight champion telling those in attendance he would "absolutely" come out of retirement to rematch McGregor or fight Khabib Nurmagomedov - but he wouldn't do it for less than $940 million (AUD).

"Like I said before, 'I'm retired but I'm not retired from getting a couple of dollars.

"So if I'm able to entertain the world and have some fun, and this is easy entertainment and I can make US$600 million with two guys [Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor], why not?"

Mayweather banked $585m AUD and officially called it quits in 2017 after beating UFC star Conor McGregor in a crossover boxing bout.

He went back on his word on retirement about a year later to beat featherweight Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition bout in Tokyo, netting him just under $14 million.

And then earlier this year Mayweather announced he was "coming out of retirement in 2020" to work on a "spectacular event" with UFC boss Dana White.

The 50-0 fighter laughed off claims he's going broke in an interview with The Sun, poking fun at recent reports of his decreasing wealth.

"It's crazy. You guys hear things about 'Floyd needs money'. I don't need (anything) but I don't mind making some more money."

Mayweather isn't the first athlete to turn to online meet and greet services to make a dollar.

Mike Tyson boasted earnings of $20,000 in the first six hours when he signed up with Cameo for personal video calls.
