It was Wimbledon 2014 when Serena Williams and her sister Venus were playing their first-round doubles match. The pair with 14 doubles Grand Slam titles were competing against the Georgian Oksana Kalashnikova and Ukrainian Olga Savchuk.
In that match, one of the funniest moments of the tournament took place. Serena was on the receiving end, and she returned the opponent’s serve with a deep forehand. Then Venus came up with a volley, and the backhand cross-court drive volley response landed into the tramlines and made Serena run on the baseline.
Serena Williams falls into the crowd
While chasing the ball she attempted to play the shot, but it went haywire. Simultaneously she lost control over her speed and fell in the lap of one of the spectators. “I was running and I couldn’t stop,” Serena said. “Had some lovely gents that was able to break my fall, so it was really nice.”
Upon the conclusion of the point, everyone in the house enjoyed the hilarious moment and gave it a round of applause. “Some wonderful gentlemen caught me yesterday as I dove in the crowd. It was so funny, I just started laughing. It was so embarrassing, that I just had to laugh about it,” Serena Williams expressed on the same, the next day.
In the late-night doubles match, Venus and Serena Williams won their first-round match 5–7, 6–1, 6–4. But their next match turned to be a nightmare for the ‘dynamic duo’ of women’s tennis.
They were playing Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Vögele and were down 0-3 in the opening set. Serena was not moving well on the court and was unable to toss the ball for a serve. Serena was suffering from a viral illness. The American was in tears when she was forced to pull out from Wimbledon.
“I am heartbroken I’m not able to continue in the tournament. I thought I could rally this morning because I really wanted to compete but this bug just got the best of me,” Williams mentioned.
In 2014, on the singles court, Serena lost to Alize Cornet 6–1, 3–6, 4–6 in the third round. And towards the end of the year, she won in Stanford Classic, Cincinnati Open, US Open, and WTA Finals.
